Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
